In the last post I talked about the importance of having anchored back links with your targeted keywords pointing to your website. Links are important yes but not all links are created equal and some can even be harmful to your site.
I get a lot of e-mails and inquiries from clients and potential clients asking about offers they’ve seen online for things like 10,000 directory submissions for 100 bucks or 10,000 blog comments for $39.95 or 1000 bookmark links for some obscenely low price.
Number one the same principles that apply off-line apply online. If it looks too good to be true it probably is… A good majority of these services will actually do more harm than good..
The wrong link from the wrong place could lead to your website being de indexed by Google and other major search engines. Spammers use a lot of these same pages to link to their networks of sites and to prevent the spamming of their search engine Google will deindex any site that has a link from these “link farms.” These pages reside on what are referred to as Google as “bad neighborhoods” and you want to stay away from them. Spammers need your links on these sites because it helps legitimize these link farms and it also works to hide all of their links. ( times out of 10 the spammers are the same people selling you the links!
Furthermore if the providers of these services don’t vary your anchor text there is an even higher likelihood that your website will be deindexed. Getting too many links with the same anchor text is a sign to Google that you are a spammer and they will deindex your site. This practice is known as “Google Bombing” and it will get you in trouble. Unfortunately a lot of the people providing these services either have no clue or they just don’t care but it is you who will end up paying the price for it.
The majority of these services link to your website using low quality link resources that are irrelevant to your website making the links worthless if they ever even get indexed by Google. The Google search engine algorithm is getting more and more complex by the day and these days sites that link to you that have nothing in common with your site are usually discounted by Google at best and your website could get penalized at worst.
And finally Google also uses a system by which they rank each site in its index to determine its authority. It is called page rank and a numbering system is used to rank the sites from zero, the lowest, to 10 the highest. When doing search engine optimization you want to focus on getting links from high page rank pages. The higher the authority the better the link and the higher up the search engine rankings your website should go.
Search engine optimization is a lot like human resources and accounting in that it is constantly evolving. What works today may not work tomorrow and what is okay today could get you deindexed tomorrow so make sure the people you hire to optimize your website know what they’re doing. And above all else, build a quality website that is a useful resource for the folks who visit it.
